The narrow gauge train of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway climbs up to 6200 feet (2,000 meters) while groaning and emitting smoke. The building of one of the world’s first mountain trains was a technical feat accomplished during the late 1800s. The Mountain Railways of India is also called the Toy Train. The track--constructed between 1879 and 1881 under the British colonial government–travels the route from Siliguri to Darjeeling climbing the moutainous terrain. After more than hundred years, the Toy Train still operates with its original technology. It was used during the British colonial period to transport–and helped reduce carrier costs--the Darjeeling tea which was very popular. Today the tea is transported by truck. The Darjeeling Himalayan Train weaves through the Bazaars of the mountain villages, passes through monasteries high in the clouds, steams by a women weaving on the next track and crosses through extended tea plantations. The 25-mile (46 kilometers) long iron track of the Nilgiri hill train in the state Tamilnadu was included in 2005 in UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
