Ranthambore National Park

Ranthambore National Park lies in district Sawai Madhopur in the Indian state Rajasthan. It is situated only 142 km from Jaipur and 340 km from Delhi. Because of its situation near Jaipur, Ranthambore National Park is one of the most visted national parks of India. In rare unanimity, nature lovers count this 1957 established national park to one of the most beautiful in entire India. The geological coinage of the 392 km² large sanctuary, with its rough rock faces and steep cliffs, have preserved the wilderness in Ranthambore National Park over centuries from a transformation into farmland. So a beautiful nature oasis was able to develop in the park amidst the Aravalli mountains transversed through small rivers and lakes, which radiates a unique fascination. These characteristics of the park made it appear as a site of many nature films.

The fort laid in the middle of the park, by which a beautiful outlook offers itself over the impressive park landscape, shows yet today clear traces of past battles and documents therewith that the zone in earlier centuries was not a untouched nature paradise, but rather a rigorously fought battlefield. The fort erected in the 10th century as a center of a local ruler house was conquered repeatedly, so for example, in 1301 by the sultan of Delhi and in 1569 by the troops of Akbar. Later, it became the hunting ground of the Maharajas of Jaipur.

Ranthambore was associated as one of the first national parks of the Project Tiger, whereby the park administration took into account more consistent than somewhere the special necessaries of life of these shy wild cats. Since the beginning of the large-scale rescue operation before more than 20 years, the tiger population in Ranthambore reproduced on today about 40 animals. In hardly another national park of India, there are the chances to get the sight of a tiger, more largely than in Ranthambore. To this also contributes, that the tigers feel within the park terrain so native and safe, that they go always more frequently in daylight on prey hunt. Moreover the clear forest, that loses in the winter its foliage, facilitates to look through easily and grants outstanding observation possibilities. So it is an unforgettable impression to see the tigers through the ruins of the fort.

Animals in Park: Especially, frequently observed, are the Sambar deers, whcih are also the head prey of the tiger. Further mammals to be found in Ranthambore National Park ahe thrree kinds of deer (barking, hog, Black buck and chital), Nilgai (or Bluebull), jackal and antelopes. Extremely rarely sighted are hyenas and leopards. In addition, over 270 species of bird made the zone their homeland. Next to vulture and eagles, migratory birds such as the black stork, the bar-headed goose and the osprey are among the usually seen types. This diversity of nature impressions settles the special charm of Ranthambore.

Safaris: There are two possibilities to undertake a Safari: in an open bus (canter) (10-20 person) or per jeep for maximal 5 persons and accompanied by a trained colleague of the Wildlife authority. The Safaris last about 2 ½ hours and conducted in early morning (at around 6 a.m.) and in afternoon after lunch (at around 2.30 p.m.). Per day, 2 Jeepsafaris are usual. Foreign visitors must let themselves register during booking with their passport data. Entrance fees and camera fees are obligatory.

Best trip time: Most popular trip time for Ranthambore, beacuse of the mild climate, are the winter months from November until February, to be sure the night temperatures sink sometimes to the freezing point. Right hot day temperatures with up to 40 °C and accordingly the time between March and June is less popular. To be sure these months are favorable for animal observations because life in the park concentrates extensively at the lakes. During the monsoon time from the 1st of July to 1st of October, the national park remains closed because the unfortified ways soften and are not passable. Simple lodging possibilities are found in Sawai Madhopur while the better lie at the street to the national park.
