Periyar National Park is the most popular animal protection park of south India in Kerala at the boundary to Tamil Nadu. This nature protectorate lies around 900 ms high in the "Cardamom Hills", the southern part of the mountain range "Western Ghats", that extends from Bombay to almost to the south tip of India. 26 km² large Periyarsee was accumulated in 1895 by the Britons for the water supply of the city Madurai. The surroundings of the lake was recognised in 1934 as a reserve, that comprises 777 km². The reserve received in 1978 its current name: "Periyar tiger reserve". Here the Indian tiger found in protected habitat. Its population is counted around 35. The number of the Indian elephants is by far higher: around 1,000 elephants live here. Epicenter is the Periyar lake that serves as a bathtub for the wild elephants. The trip into the "Cardamom Hills" and the later departure to the coastal Kerala are however very interesting and diversified: Beautiful views, villages, coconut-palm and rubber plantations, spice gardens and the "Tea Estates", wonderful green tea growing areas.
Animals and Birds in park: Wild elephants, tiger, Gaur (Indian Bison), Sambhar deer, Chital (spotted deer), wild pig, Bison, leopard, panther, Macacs, Indian Langur, flying squirrel, mongoose, king cobra as well as 260 species of bird, such as Nilgiri wood pigeon, fly catcher, cormorant, heron and kingfisher.
Safaris: Trip through the arid of the Periyar lake in the motorboat. Trekking on foot in small groups (registration and payment on the spot).
Best Trip Time: September until May. The park is opened throughout the year. The monsoon takes place at the time from June to October. Lodging facilities are just excellent in Periyar. There are several four star rated nature resorts.
