Keoladeo is a national park in the state Rajasthan (India), also famous as Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary or Keoladeo Ghana Bird Sanctuary. This 28 km² large bird protectorate Keoladeo Ghana is a real paradise for ornithologists. It is situated in Bharatpur, 55 km west to the Agra. Keoladeo was originally the private duck hunting ground of the Maharajas of Bharatpur. In the swamp landscape hibernate many water birds from Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, China and Siberia. Over 364 species of bird including the rare Siberian Cranes were observed
The city Bharatpur was flooded regularly during the monsoon time until 1760, when the Ajan Dam was erected. Through the wearing out of the soil related for the dam building, a hollow ground space was created, that filled itself with water and became the Keoladeo lake. A special guest of Keoladeo National Park was Siberian Crane that was observed in 1993 for the last time in the park and probably is become extinct meanwhile. Best trip time: Most guests visit the all-year opened Keoladeo National Park in the winter months from November until March. Also the breeding time in the monsoon months is especially attractive however especially since in August and Septembers, when the water lilies bloom.
