Kaziranga is an Indian national park, lies in the state Assam in the landscape of the Karbi Anglong hill in the northeast of India. The park zone is bordered by the mighty river brahamaputra in the north, and by the national highway no. 37 in the south. The national park administration has its seat in Bokahat. Four administration stations are in Agaratoli, Baguri, Burrhpahar and Kohora.
The Kaziranga National Park is habitat for the rare One-Horned Rhinoceros and the tiger. Until 1908, it was hunt paradise and wilder paradise, than the 572 km² large lowlands with swamps, elephant grass, rattan wood and always green rain forest was transformed into a wild reserve. Since 1999, Kaziranga has been the UNESCO world nature heritage. With almost 1000 One-Horned Rhinoceros, Kaziranga has the world's largest population of Great Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros.
The climate is stamped through the monsoon, between November and April falls hardly precipitation, the rain in the remaining months brings the most precipitation of the year of 1,830 mm. About two-third of the park area isflooded then. The average temperature in the summer amounts to 32 °C, that in the winter 10 °C.
Today, many problems arise through the settlement round around the national park. The region of the Karbi Along hill, that comprises around 10,500 km² , is used agriculturally, about 800,000 people live here. Through the extensive bearing of farm animals it always happens again and again, that field cattle penetrates into the national park and brings in illnesses (for example splenic fever), that transmitted through direct contact with the wild animals or over feces.
Animals in Park: To the wild animals, that live in the Kaziranga, belong the Asian elephant (about 2,500 animals in April 2005), the Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros (1.500), Bengal tiger (140), wild water buffaloes, the Indian langurs, wild pigs, gibbons, Hog Badger, jungle cats, swamp deer (Barasingha, large asian dear type), muntjacs, Sambar deer, and the Gaur as well as Asian wild dog, leopard, Indian bear, and endangered Ganges Dolphin.
Safaris: Safaris in Kaziranga National Park take place early mornings and in the afternoon on trained elephant with Mahout. Depending on the season, also boat and jeep trips are possible. Time duration: about two hours. Entrance fee obligatorily.
Best trip time: Middle November until beginning of April. From June to September is the monsoon time. In this time, the Brahmaputra is often overflowed and is to be seen therefore by a visit. Mostly damp hot climate, excluded in the winter months, in which mornings and evenings quite cool temperatures prevail, rules. Lodging facilities are excellent in Kaziranga.
