The Corbett National Park lies in the Indian state Uttarakhand at the foot of the Himalaya. India first national park and tiger protectorate is named after the famous scientist, author and photographer Jim Corbett, who in 1936 was significantly involved at the time of the establishment of the national park near Nainital. In 1936 established and 550 km² large national park, lies at the foot of the Shiwalik mountain range that belongs to the Himalaya. The heights move between 400 and 1210 ms. The park is drained by the river Ramganga, a tributary of the holy Ganges. Edward James “Jim” Corbett was in the thirties a legendary big game hunter, who acted later as an author and photographer. As a successful hunter of man eating tiger and through its books being based on true adventures such as "The Man eaters of Kumaon", "The Man eating Leopard of Rudraprayag", "Jungle Love", "Bachelor of Powalgarh" and "Pipal Pani tiger", he participated actively in the Indian nature history.
Originally it was named Hailey National Park, than its name has been changed to Ramganga National Park in 1952 for a short-term, but it was renamed again in 1957 into Corbett National Park. The Corbett National Park comprises 520 square kilometer. Together with the adjoining Sonanadi sanctuary, it forms the Corbett-tiger-reserve that was established in 1973 in the course of the Project Tiger. The largest river in the park is the Ramganga that flows at the west boundary of the protectorate into a large lake. The landscape is characterized through wide valleys and hills. In east western direction, a hill chain passes in the middle of the area. The main vegetation form represents the Sal forests, at higher altitudes one also finds pine stocks. In the lowland stand river forests, whose grasslands are designated by the local inhabitants as "chaurs".
Animals in Park: The main attractions of the park are tigers, leopards and wild elephants. Beside it, it is a home of mammals like rhesus monkey, langurs, gold jackal, red foxes, red dogs, asian black bears, smooth-coated otter, small civet cats, four kinds of deer (barking, sambar, hog, Black buck and chital), Indian Grey Mongoose, yellow-throated martens, ghoral (goat-antelopes), Indian pangolins, wild pigs, muntjacs. In the waters, live swamp crocodiles live, moreover one can observe about 580 species of bird in the park.
Safaris: The early mornings and the afternoon Jeepsafaris take place, accompanied by a experienced park ranger. The Elephant safaris are led by a Mahout (elephant rider) and lead through rough terrain with brushes and elephant grass. Time duration: about two hours. Entrance fee obligatorily.
Best trip time: February until May. The park is closed from middle June until middle November. In December until January, it can be very cold, in the summer months on the other hand very hot. Lodging facilities are excellent in Corbett. There are many star rated nature resorts.
