Bandipur National Park (Karnataka)

Bandipur National Park lies on foot of the Nilgri mountians, also well known as "Blue Mountains", in the most southern point of Karnataka and borders by the Nagarhole national park in the north, by the Mudumalai wild protectorate (Tamil Nadu) in the south as well as by the Wynad wild protectorate (Kerala) in the south-west. Altogether the four protectorates cover an area of astonishing 5500 km². Bandipur national park is one of the few in Asia, in which large elephant herds live. Bandipur belongs, with about 4000 elephants, 74 tigers and a stately amount of Gaurs to the most popular national parks of India. The Gaur living here in herds is the largest wild ox of the world. Bandipur was established in 1931 by the Maharaja of Mysore for his pompous hunt excursions. Since 1973, Bandipur belongs to the first seven tiger reserves of India and the World Wide Fund for nature (WWF) selected it for the "Project Tiger". The zone is hilly, 780–1454 m high, grown over with tropical tree types such as Teak and rose wood, bamboo and Sandalwood. Not only the annual monsoons, but rather also the numerous rivers provide for sufficient moisture.

Animals in park: Asian or Indian elephant (elephas maximus), Gaur (Bos gaurus), four-horn-antelope, tiger (panther tigris), leopard, wild dog, hyena, Sambar deer, (cervus unicolor), Chital deer(axis axis), Muntjac, Indian black bear, wild pig, ape types and many species of bird.

Safaris: Trip in the open jeep, and on elephant. Time duration: 2–3 hours. The Safaris are carried out twice daily. Entrance fees and camera fees obligatorily.

Arrival: 80 km from Mysore, 19 km from the Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary and 79 km from Ooty. Next airports are Bangalore (220 km) and Coimbatore (168 km).

Best trip time: The national park is frequented by two monsoons, once from middle June until September, then from October to November. This does not mean that it rains uninterruptedly in this time. Short, violent showers are usual, after that the sun shines again and lets green vegetation to sprout everywhere. Bandipur is opened throughout the year. From November until January, the evenings can be cool.
