General Information on the Lakshadweep Islands

The Lakshadweep is a chain of islands situated around 150 miles from the coast of Kerala. Discovered in 435 A.D., the 36 main islands--having a total area of 15 square miles-form one of the world’s most beautiful archipelagos. There is coral atoll, endless sand beaches, sand banks, reefs and a magical under water world that invites diving or snorkeling.

Only ten of the islands are inhabited, and are home to 50,000 people. The main employment of the residents is fishing and cultivation of coconut palm trees. The seclusion of the islands has maintained the original way of life for the islands’ residents-allowing you to be immersed in another way of life. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time on these islands that are so much like paradise!

Activities: If you want to totally relax, you can simply laze at the beach, enjoy the sun, listen to the sound of the sea and watch the swaying palm trees in the ocean breeze. While you can snorkel or dive to see the fascinating life under the sea, you can also listen to the music of the sea birds and watch the crabs as they dance along the shore line in the shallow waters.

In addition to snorkeling and diving, enjoy the oceanside activities and try your hand at deep sea fishing, sea kayaking, and more. Even if you do not have scuba certification, our expert scuba diving experts and guides can assist you. Because of the offshore island reefs, the lagoons are shallow and safe for snorkeling and diving. Recently an old shipwreck was discovered in this area. You will also see a variety of fish, turtle and other sea life; in addition to the living coral reefs that are a photographer’s dream come true. If you are new to diving, you will learn how to scuba dive Inside the reefs where the deepness is confined to 30 meters. If you enjoy deep sea fishing, you can rent a boat captained by someone who knows where the best spots are to fish for game fish such as Barracudas, Sailfish, and Yellow fin Tuna. If you are a serious angler, bring along your own equipment.

Food: Fresh fruit, coconuts....and seafood! You’ll be able to sample some of the most delicious dishes served in India, and you can watch as the fish that you caught...or other local fishermen brought into dock...are prepared for lunch or dinner. The kitchen’s staff feature some of the best international cooks who will make sure you get to sample some of the local Indian meals in addition to the best seafood you will have ever dined on. And while you sun on the beach...or after a long morning of diving...you can relax at the beach side bar and sip on a tropical drink, or cold refreshing local beer. And if you are hungry, try the barbecue cooked right on the beach.

Lodging: Foreign tourists can only stay with a special visa on the uninhabited island Bangaram. There are a string of Casino hotels plus a resort with standard and deluxe bungalows. The standard bungalows are simple and comfortable. There are 30 standards bungalows with a palm tree verandah, attached bathroom, air conditioner and refrigerator. There are also four deluxe bungalows, which are larger than the standard one and offer more privacy. In the middle of the island, there is a restaurant hut that is exquisitely made out of bamboo and palm tree leaves. There is electricity and water supplied 24 hours a day.

Ayurveda: This beautiful environment is ideal for an Ayurveda treatment or relaxing massage on the beach or under the palm trees. The Resort offers a well-equipped Ayurvedic center.
