Day 1 - Welcome to Delhi
You will arrive at the Delhi International Airport. Delhi is India's second largest metropolis next to Mumbai, which is located in the northern part of the country. The architectural features in the city are similar to those which can be seen in Athens, Rome and Istanbul.
Day 2 - Exploring Delhi
Your first day you will explore the old and new city of Delhi. You’ll be mesmerized by the 100-foot, red-stone boundary walls of Red Fort built during the 17th century. Opposite this ancient structure is the Jama Masjid, built in 1656. Found in front of the Jama Masjid is the 1656 AD construction of red sandstone and white marble. It is the largest mosque in India where 20,000 people can pray together. You will also tour the town in a Rickshaw. Along the streets of old Delhi you will see the Raj Ghat, Mahatma Gandhi (Father of the Nation) Memorial, which is close to the river Yamuna. Next, you will visit the Humayun Tomb of the second Mughal emperor, which was completed by his wife during the 16th century. Shahjahan had the vision for the structure of the Taj Mahal. The Qutub Minar, a 220-foot tower made by one of the first Muslim leaders in India, was built between 1199 and 1368 AD. It runs counter to Rashtrapati Bhawan, the residence of the President of India. There you’ll see the buildings of government and parliament and India Gate which is 130-foot wall built in memory of the soldiers who died during the First World War.
Day 3 - From Delhi to Varanasi, by Air
On the second day of your Buddhist trail tour package, you will take a journey by air to a place called Varanasi, an ancient city situated along the banks of the Holy River Ganges. Varanasi is one of the world’s oldest centers of learning. The oldest name is Kashi, which means "city of light". The city is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the holy cities of the Hindus and for the Jain.
After arriving in Varanasi, you will be transferred to the hotel and after a briefrest you will travel to Sarnath (5 miles), one of the main centers of the Buddhist religion. Buddha preached his first sermon here after he received enlightenment. The entire complex, Dhamekh Stupa (5th to 6th century) or Dharma Chakra, also the largest building, was built to pay tribute to the place where Buddha preached his first five disciples. Visit also Dharmarajika Stupa (273-326 BC), where allegations are the bones of Buddha. Here Buddha meditated. Then, you will go back to the hotel to spend the night.
Day 4 - Exploring Varanasi
At early dawn, you will board a boat to ride on the river Ganges. Watch the sunrise and you can view hundreds of folks worshiping and taking a bath in the sacred river. Come back afterwards to the hotel for breakfast. Then, you can continue your metropolis tour of the older city by visiting the temples including Kashi Hindu University where more than fifty thousand students from all over the world study. Varanasi is situated on the banks of the holy river Ganges. The oldest name is Kashi and means "city of Light". The city is devoted to Lord Shiva and is one of the holiest cities of the Hindus. It is also one of the oldest centers of learning of the world. After your arrival in Varanasi, you will be transferred to your hotel and after a short break you make an excursion to Sarnath (5 miles), one of the head centers of Buddhism. Buddha preached his first sermon in Samath after he got enlightenment. Of the entire complex, the Dhamekh Stupa (built during the 5th and 6th centuries) and the Dharma Chakra are imposing buildings built to pay tribute to the place where Buddha preached his first disciples. You will also visit the Dharmarajika Stupa (273-326 BC) where Buddha meditated, and where the alleged bones of Buddha are said to be at rest.You will return to your hotel for dinner and an overnight stay. You can also inspect the fort and museum on the bank of the river Ganges. Varanasi is where you will spend the rest of the night.
Day 5 - Varanasi - Khajuraho
You will be transferred in the morning for a flight to Khajuraho. Upon arrival in Khajuraho you will be transferred to your hotel. You will visit the Eastern and Western group of temples. The figures and sculptures in these temples honor women and sex. These temples are around 1000 years old and the only of its kind in the whole world. During the evening visit the dance show in Kandariya Art of Culture. Overnight stay in Khajuraho.
Day 6 - Khajuraho - Orchha - Jhansi - Agra
After breakfast you will drive to Jhansi to board the shatabdi train at 5:56 P.M. to Agra. On the way visit Orchha, which is famous for its 17th century forts and palaces. After arrival in Agra at around 9:00 P.M. you will transfer to your hotel for an overnight stay.
Day 7 - Agra
After the breakfast, you will visit the world-famous Taj Mahal (built between 1631-1653 AD). A poem in white marble it was built by Mughal ruler Shah Jahan for his deceased wife Mumtaz Mahal. Its extravagant architecture reveals its secret of being one of the Seven Wonders of the World. 20,000 workers with experts from Italy, France, Iran and Asia were busied for 21 years with the monument. Afterwards you will visit the huge and massive Agra fort at the west bank of the Yamuna River. The Agra fort was built in the 16th century by Akbar and was completed by his grandson. Then you will visit Sikandra, the impressive grave of Akbar, the most powerful of all Mughal emperors which is located about 6 miles away from the city. You will then return to your hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 8 - Agra - Jaipur
After breakfast you will visit the massive Agra fort at the west bank of the Yamuna River. The Agra fort was built during the 16th century by Akbar and was completed by his grandson. After the visit, you will travel to Jaipur, the capital of the state Rajasthan, also well known as "Pink City” because of its pink houses facade and city wall. En route you will visit Fatehpur Sikri (22 miles from Agra), the former metropolitan of Akbar, built in 1569. Akbar shifted his capital to Fatehpur Sikri, but after 13 years due to the scarcity of water, the capital was relocated to Lahore in Pakistan and later again to Agra. Arrival in Jaipur in the afternoon. Overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 9 - Jaipur
After an early breakfast you will drive to fort Amber (6 miles), the former capital of Kachhawaha Rajputs. On the way, you will stop to visit the city’s landmark: the Hawa Mahal (palace of the winds). Built during the 18th century, the five-story building features 953 windows and niches from which the royal women observed the procession in the street without being seen. Next you will visit Amber fort, which lies on 400-foot-tall hill and is surrounded by the chain of mountains known as Aravalli. Afterwards you will visit the Pink city Jaipur. The city palace built in 1734 lies in the center of Jaipur and is now the residence of the royal family of Jaipur and a beautiful museum. After that you will visit Jantar Mantar, an observatory. It was built in the 18th century by the city founder Jai Singh II. The instruments are out of stone and marble and served to the sky observation. You will ten return to your hotel for an overnight stay.
Day 10 - Jaipur - Jodhpur
After breakfast, you will drive to Jodhpur. Upon your arrival you will be transferred to your hotel for an overnight stay.
Day 11 - Jodhpur
After breakfast you will visit Jodhpur the second largest city in Rajasthan and once the capital of the Marwar. Today the city lies around the imposing Mehrangarh fort. The Mehrangarh fort was built in 1459 on a 110-foot-tall sandstone hill. From the top of the hill you can see the old town and the priests’ houses painted blue which gives the town it’s name of “blue city”. You will then travel on to Jaswant Thada, a large Cenotaph, which was built in 1899 for Maharajah Jaswant Singh II. After lunch, you can stroll through the old markets, where you can also buy various spices for yourself. You will return to your hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 12 - Jodhpur - Ranakpur - Udaipur
After breakfast, you will drive to Udaipur. En route you can visit Ranakpur where three beautiful Jain temples built during the 14th and 15th centuries still stand. The head temple Adinatha (1439 AD) took 65 years to carve the marble into 80 domes supported by 1444 different carved pillars (no two are alike). It is one of the five holiest places for the Jain Pilgrimage. After your visit, you will enjoy lunch at the nearby restaurant and proceed to Udaipur. Upon your arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel for an overnight stay.
Day 13 - Udaipur - Mumbai
During the morning you will explore Udaipur which lies in the Girwa valley in the middle of the Aravali hill and is described as a romantic city with its lakes, gardens, temple and palaces. You will visit the city palace built in 1570 AD by Maharana Udai Singh at the bank of the Pichola Lake. This impressive complex of different palaces is a mixture of Rajput and Mughal influences. You will then visit the Jagdish temple. Built in 1651 AD this temple is a beautiful example of the Nagara style temple architecture. You will also enjoy a boat trip on the Pichola Lake. During the afternoon you will be transfered to the airport for the flight to Mumbai. Upon your arrival you will be transferred to your hotel for an overnight stay.
Day 14 - Mumbai - Aurangabad
After breakfast you will go on a half-day city excursion. The most important sights to visit are: The gateway of India, built on the occasion of the visit of George V during 1911 in the city area Colaba; the Victoria terminus (VT)-- one of the railway stations of the city (world heritage site) built in 1887; the Prince of Wales museum; the Crawford Market; the Dhobi Ghats; the "laundry" of Mumbai; the Mahalaxmi temple; the Marine Drive; the bank street and promenade Mumbai at whose northern end are the Chowpatty Beach; the hanging gardens; and the Malabar hills. You will have an afternoon transfer to the airport for the flight to Aurangabad. Upon your arrival you will be transferred to your hotel for an overnight stay.
Day 15 - Aurangabad
After breakfast you will visit the Ajanta caves, which are a group of 30 caves created around 300 BC. The frescoes describe the life of Buddha. These are best frescoes in the world and the caves stand on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The caves were discovered accidentally in 1819. You will then return to your hotel for an overnight stay.
Day 16 - Aurangabad - Mumbai
After breakfast you will visit the monolithic rock caves in Ellora which date back to the 3rd through 8th centuries. The caves are on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The three groups of temples follow the Buddhist, Hindu and Jain beliefs. The Kailash temple, which is dedicated to God Shiva, is the most powerful and largest monolithic temple in the entire world. You will have an evening transfer to the airport for flight to Mumbai. Upon your arrival you will be transferred to your hotel for an overnight stay.
Day 17 - Mumbai - Chennai (Madras)
You will have a morning transfer to the airport for the flight to Chennai. Upon your arrival you will be transferred to your hotel for a short rest. Afterwards you will go for a city excursion. Madras is a pulsating metropolis with over 6 million residents. Today many south Indian feature films are shot here so the city has earned the name "Hollywood of India". On the city excursion, you will visit the Kapaleshvara temple which is dedicated to God Shiva and is a good example of the colorful south Indian temple architecture. After that, you will visit the fort St. George, a trade post built during 1639. You will also visit the 16th-century St. Thomas Church. At the National museum, you will see sculptures out of the Pallava, Pandava and Chola time. Your excursion will also include a visit to the National Art Gallery and Marina Beach.
Day 18 - Chennai - Kanchipuram - Mahabalipuram
After breakfast you will drive about 40 miles to the far temple city, Kanchipuram. It is among the "seven holy cities of" India. After each Kanchipuram was the capital of the Pallava, the Chola and the Vijayanagar kings. While the country is dotted with fabulous temples, you will visit the three most important temples in South India: the Kailasanatha-temple, the Vaikunthaperumal temple, as well as the Ekambareshwara temple. Kanchipuram is also very well known for its hand woven silk materials. You’ll then drive to Mahabalipuram which is well known for its 7th century Five Rathas. These are the world's largest stone relief. You’ll then arrive and be transferred to your hotel. You’ll have the rest of the afternoon free to rest on the beach.
Day 19 - Mahabalipuram
After breakfast you will start your tour by visiting the 7th-century Shore temple which is surrounded by lush gardens. In addition you’ll visit the 7th- century Five Rathas, which are the world's largest stone relief; Bhagiratha’s Penance, a 1900-square-foot rock block; and rock cut caves from the 6th and 7th centuries. In the evening, you can explore this small town, where you can also see the soap stone workers making designs and sculptures with chisel and hammer. You will stay overnight in Mahabalipuram.
Day 20 - Mahaballipuram - Pondicherry - Tanjore (Thanjavur)
After breakfast, you will drive to Tanjore. En route you’ll visit Pondicherry, the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and the city Auroville, which covers more than 2000 acres. Today also, you can see the influence of French rule in Pondicherry, because the Frenchmen strongly were represented here until 1954. Many residents still speak French in addition to Tamil. You’ll then continue on to Tanjore where you’ll be transferred to your hotel for an overnight stay.
Day 21 - Tanjore - Trichy (Trichurapalli)
After breakfast you’ll visit the 9th-century Brihadeshwara Temple. This temple gave Tanjore it’s name of the “Jewel of South India”. The temple-dedicated to the God Shiva-features a 200-foot-high tower shaped like a pyramid. It is crowned by a heavy cupola weighing 88 tons. You’ll also visit Raja Rajan Art Gallery which houses bronze statues of the 9th through 16th centuries. You’ll continue on to Trichy where you’ll be transferred to your hotel for refreshment and rest. During the afternoon you’ll visit the famous Rock Fort Temple that is carved out of rock that is about 300 feet high. Wear your walking shoes because you’ll have to climb 345 steps to get to the top of the temple. Once there, you will have a wonderful view of the city. You’ll also have time to visit Srirangam, home to 21 temple towers on an island in the Kaveri River. The Ranganathasvami temple, dedicated to God Vishnu, is one of the largest temples in South India and is famous for its beautiful sculptures. After that, you will visit the Jambukeshwara temple, dedicated to God Shiva, and one of the oldest and largest in Tamil Nadu with five walls and seven Gopurams (soaring towers).
Day 22 - Trichy - Madurai
After breakfast you will drive to Madurai where you’ll be transferred to your hotel for refreshment and rest. Madurai is home to many: Pilgrims, beggars, business persons, cow vehicles and many awaiting Rickshaw drivers. It is one of the oldest cities of South India and a center for Pilgrimage. The main attraction which lies in the middle of town is the Sri Meenakshi Temple. It was built during the 17th century in the Dravidian style with many Gopurams (soaring temple towers)and features colorful pictures of God, Goddesses, animals and mystical figures. Religious ceremonies take place here from early morning to late night. Pilgrims from all over the world visit here and sometimes up to 10000 persons are at the Temple. One of the largest temple complexes of India, within the Sri Meenakshi Temple is a market. Evenings you can pursue a temple ceremony. You’ll also have time to visit the 16th-century Thirumalai Nayak Palace before retiring at your hotel for an overnight stay in Madurai.
Day 23 - Madurai - Periyar (Thekaddy)
After breakfast you’ll drive to Thekaddy. This trip through the mountains, spice plantations and tea plantations will definitely energize your senses. After your arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel for rest and refreshment. In the late afternoon you’ll enjoy a boat trip in Periyar Wildlife National Park. This park is one of the world’s best places to see elephants in their natural surroundings. Before sunset, you’ll also be fortunate to see other wild animals visit the bank of Periyar Lake to drink and eat. You can also enjoy a pleasant walk in the markets before returning to your hotel for an overnight stay.
Day 24 - Periyar - Kumarakom (Backwaters) - Cochin
After breakfast you’ll drive to Cochin. On the way you’ll visit a Spice Farm (optional), where you can see various spice plantations such as cardamom, cinnamon, pepper, peppermint, clove, vanilla, ginger, chili, tea and coffee plants. Then you’ll continue on to Kovalam where you will enjoy a boat ride in the Backwaters. Along the bank, you will see the traditional life of people living on the banks nestled in coves of coconut and palm trees. After the boat trip, you will continue your drive to Cochin. After your arrival, you’ll be transferred to your hotel for a short break. That evening you will enjoy a Kathakali Dance Show which depicts 400 years of history and old legends in this breathtaking dance drama. The dancers wear painted fantastic costumes and color their faces with red, green and black inks. Every gesture and movement by every dancer has a special meaning. After the show you will return to your hotel for an overnight stay.
Day 25 - Cochin - Mumbai/Chennai
After breakfast, you will go on a city excursion. Madras is a pulsating metropolis with over 6 million residents. Because many south Indian feature films are shot here, the town is called the "Hollywood of India". On the city excursion, you will see the Kapaleshvara temple, which is dedicated to God Shiva and is a good example if the colorful south Indian temple architecture. At the National Museum, you will see sculptures out of the Pallava, Pandava and Chola time. Your excursion also includes a visit to the National Art Gallery and Marina Beach. Afternoon transfer to Cochin airport to board your flight to Mumbai or Chennai. After arrival in Mumbai or Chennai after dinner, you will be transferred to the international airport your flight home.
