Group of Monuments at Pattadakal

Pattadakal, 22 km from Badami in Karnataka, represents the glorious period of the Indian art form that achieved in the 7th and 8th century under the Chalukya dynasty. This art of temples is a harmonious mixture of the architectural forms of Nagara of north India and Dravidian of south India . An impressive row of nine Hindu temples can be seen here, under which the temple of Virupaksha considered as the masterpiece of all the temples. Queen Lokamahadevi erected it in the year 740 in order to honour the victory of its husband over the kings of the south.

The group of monuments in Pattadakal were nominated in 1987 by UNESCO in the list of world cultural heritage.
