Private car round trip: Kolkata - Bagdogara - Jaldapara - Darjeeling - Pemanyangtse - Gangtok - Kalimpong - Bagdogara - Kolkata/Delhi.

Day 1 - Arrive Kolkata (Calcutta)

You will arrive at the Kolkata airport during the morning. A welcome reception will be held at the airport while waiting for transfer to the hotel. Kolkata--called the "city of joy" by a French author--is the capital of West Bengal and the third largest metropolis with over 17 million residents. That afternoon you will go on a half day city excursion. Kolkata is also the homeland of mother Teresa and her worldwide well-known missionary which made the city of Kalkutta known worldwide. There are many sights in Kalkutta including Park Street, the Marine museum, the new suspension bridge construction over the Hooghly River, and the Victoria Memorial erected in memory of the British reign in Kolkata.

Day 2 - Kolkata - Bagdogara (By Flight) - Jaldapara

After arriving in Bagdogara, you will continue on to the national park Jaldapara. The park was organized during 1941 for the protection of the Indian rhinoceros in northern Bengal. The trip lasts 4.5 hours. There is an overnight stay in Jaldapara.

Day 3 - Jaldapara - Darjeeling

In the morning, you will go on a Safari while riding an elephant through Jaldapara. The national park is a paradise for bird friends. While the Indian rhinoceros are the main attraction, the part is a paradise for a wide variety of birds. During your Safari, you will also see many Elephants, Bengal tigers, Deer and other animals. In the afternoon, you will drive on to Darjeeling. Upon your arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel, and time to sample some of Darjeeling's fabulous tea and cuisine.

Day 4 - Darjeeling

Darjeeling sits above the Indian lowland at 7000 feet (2,134 m). It is the most important "echoed-station" erected by the Englishmen who wanted to escape the large heat of the Indian lowland. During the early morning, you will go to the Tiger Hill and be entertained by the fantastic sunrise (if the weather is favorable). On the return to Darjeeling, you will make a stop at the first monastery, Ghoom. You will have breakfast at the Tibetan Refugee Centre, and then travel on to the Himalayan Mountaineering institute and the Sarojini Naidu zoo. While at the zoo, you will have a chance to see the panorama while riding the Toy Train--listed as one of the top sites in the World Heritage of India. You'll have plenty of time during the afternoon to shop in the Market and Mall, before going on to visit one of the top tea plantations where you'll learn about the tea making process and taste some of the delicious Darjeeling teas. That night you'll stay in Darjeeling, and have time to taste another one of the country's fabulous meals.

Day 5 - Darjeeling - Pemanyangtse

After breakfast, you'll drive to Pemanyangtse (46 miles or 75 kilometers). That afternoon you'll visit Pemanyangtse Gompa which is home to the oldest Buddhist monastery of the state Sikkim, the Pemanyangtse monastery. Built in 1705 during the reigh of Chador Namgyal--the third Chogyal--the monastery lies at the height of 6800 feet (2085 meters). You'll be astounded at the breathtaking view as the monastery is surrounded on both sides by usually snow-covered mountains. After leaving the monastery, you will visit Pelling, a friendly small city, a little over a mile (2.5 kilometers) away from Pemanyangtse Gompa. While there you'll be able to "see for miles" as you stand on top of the highest peak of India Kanchenjunga. You will stay overnight in Pemanyangste.

Day 6 - Pemanyangtse - Gangtok

After breakfast, you will drive about 72 miles (117 kilometers) to Gangtok the capital of Sikkim. After your arrival and transfer to your hotel, you will explore the city of Gangtok during the afternoon. You will visit the Institute for Tibetology which houses rare manuscripts and Thangkas (wall pictures) of the Tibetan Buddhism. It also has the largest collection of Tibetan books. You'll also have free time to stroll in the city's fruit and vegtable markets before retiring at your hotel for another scrumptious meal.

Day 7 - Gangtok

In the morning you will visit the most important and best-known monastery in Rumtek on the other side of the valley. In the afternoon, you will visit the Enchey monastery, plus the orchid park where you can see over 450 different types of orchids. You will stay overnight in Gangtok.

Day 8 - Gangtok - Kalimpong

After breakfast, you will drive approximately 50 miles (80 kilometers) to Kalimpong. Through the wild Tista valley, you will drive through mountain jungles and tea plantations to Kalimpong. Upon transfer to your hotel, you'll have the afternoon to explore Kalimpong. In Kalimpong you can visit Thongsa Gompa or the Bhutanese monastery that was built during 1692. Tharpa Choling Gompa is part of the Yellow Hat (Gelukpa) sector of the Tibetan Buddhism-- established in Tibet in the 14th century--to which the Dalai Lama belongs. You will also visit the Sericulture institute and the Bazaars. You will stay overnight in Kalimpong.

Day 9 - Kalimpong - Bagdogara - Kolkata/Delhi

You will have a morning transfer to Bagdogara airport (about 49 miles or 80 km) for your flight to Kolkata (Delhi). Upon arrival, you will be transferred for your flight back home.
