Ujjain is home to one of India’s important festivals: the Shivratri festival. As in Haridwar, Nasik and Prayag (Allahabad), every twelve years the famous Indian pilgrimage festival is held in Ujjain. The next time will be in 2016. During the festival more than two million pilgrims gather at this holy place in order to take a ritual bath in the river.
Not only will you be able to participate in the festival if you are there during the time it is held, but you can also visit the ancient caves and excavations located north of the city. The excavations formed during the 8th century BC are from the time of Buddha, when the city was the capital of the Avanti kingdome. At that time, it was also an important regional capital of Maurya. According to the Hindu mythology Shiva changed the name from Ujjaiyini--which means "that conquered with pride"--in order to emphasize his victory over the demon king Tripuri.
Later rulers included the sultans of Mandu, the great Mughals, and Raja Jai Singh II of Jaipur. Raja Jai Singh II erected Veda Shala, one of the five observatories built in India which houses ancient astronomical instruments. Ujjain lies on the Hindu zero meridian.
While in Ujjain, also take time to visit the Mahakaleshwar, a Jyotirlinga (one of the 12 holiest Shiva temples), the Harsiddhi Mandir (Temple), the Gopal Mandir, Kalabhairav Temple and the sun clock Veda Shala in the observatory Jantar Mantar.
