After a long and colorful past, Trichy was conquered in the 10th century by the Cholas, after whose downfall it fell into the hands of the rulers of Vijayanagar from Hampi. Later, the area around Trichy was a scene of the Carnatic wars between Englishmen and Frenchmen over the predominance in India. The city is dominated by the 250-foot-high Rock Fort Temple,--a temple of the God Ganesh (here named also as Vinayaka)--is located. Visitors reach the top after a strenuous ascent of over 437 steps.
Built around 1660 AD, on the way to the top of the Rock Fort Temple complex, visitors find several small rock temples and shrines. From the top, one has a wonderful lovely view over the city and over Srirangam Island where the gigantic temple complex of Sri Ranganathaswamy lies. With 21 temple towers and over 100 temples and shrines this temple compound is the largest of its kind in whole India.
The temple compound of Srirangam Island was probably built in the 10th century by the Cholas and later expanded by the following rulers between 14th and 17th centuries so that it was able to reach its current size. The lasttemple tower was erected in the first end of the last century. The temple is dedicated to Vishnu in his manifestation as Sri Ranganatha, represented resting on a five-headed Cobra. The sanctum is not accessible for non-Hindus. The Shiva and his wife dedicated Sri Jambukeshwara temple lies few kilometers eastwards and built in the same period. The dome of one of the temple tower is covered with gold. Around the external wall ring, one can stroll through the Bazaars.
