Sravanabelagola is a place near Mysore in the south Indian state Karnataka. The population amounts to 5,141 (calculation year: 1st of January 2006). In Sravanabelagola lies one of the best-known sanctuaries of the Jainism. The temple complex is one of the five temple mounts of the Jains. Well known is the temple for the 19 ms high statue of Bahubali. He was a son of the ruler Vrishabhadeva, who battled with his brother for the succession of the throne. After he had conquered him, he recognized, however, the futility of his doing and secluded himself in the forest for meditation. After his enlightenment, he entitled the name "Gomatheswara".
