Shekhawati -- the “land of Shekha” – is a semi-desert region located in the northeastern Rajasthan. It lies between Bikaner, Jaipur and Delhi. The city was named in honor of Rao Shekhaji (1433-1488), a cousin of Jaipur’s Kachchawaha rulers. Rao declared his independence during 1471, and it was not until 1738 that Jaipur was able to regain its soveriegnty over the Shekhawats.

Despite being a semi-desert town, Shekhawati’s rich business persons live in mansions (also known as Havelis). Some of the most beautiful Havelis found in Shekhawati region are: Sikar (Gopinath, Raghunath, Madan Mohan), Nawalgarh, Dundlod (Goenka), Lachmangarh (you’ll also discover a fort and the Ganeriwala-Haveli here), Mandawa and Fatehpur. In addition, you will discover richly decorated temples which feature artwork depicting religious life, stories and legends of folk heroes, historic events and famous people.
