When you think of India, you think of “delight” and “joy”. And now you can visit the city that epitomizes just that: the city of delight, the city of joys… Mandu. Also called Mandogar the city is located in the state Madhya Pradesh. Hidden in the Vindhya mountain range, Mandu is about 400 miles north of Bombay and is easily reachable from the Indore city.
Mandu is the world’s largest fortified city. Its 300-year-old walls run for more than 38 miles. Built during the 6th century, Mandu’s history revolves around the love story between Rani Rupmati and Baz Gahadur, the last independent king of the region. The 28-mile-long parapet around Mandu opens into a magnificent city through its massive gates. The city’s history is rich with change: it was conquered in 1401 by an Islamic sultan and then was reigned independently until 1562. After that it fell into the hands of the Mughal emperor Akbar.
Under Akbar’s direction, 12 artificial lakes were designed and deep cisterns dug into the ground in order to collect the rainwater. On the roofs, gullies were built-in, where rainwater was able to evaporate and cool the houses. When you visit the city you will be in awe at Jahaz Mahal, a 120-meter-long, ship-shaped palace, which sits between two artificial rivers. You will also be able to visit its sister building, the Hindola Mahal.
Shah Jahan—who built the Taj Mahal in Agra—was inspired by the magnificent Jahaz Mahal and Hindola Mahal in Mandu.
