Darjeeling lies in northwest Bengal on a mountain back that ranges in height from 21,000 to 23,000 feet. The town is located almost at the border of Sikkim.
Darjeeling is not only famous for its fabulous tea - claimed as the best tea in the world - but also as a famous former summer residence of the British people. Darjeeling is also known for its fantastic view of the Himalaya Mountains, whose highest peak is Kanchenjunga situated in the boundary area between Nepal and Sikkim. Kanchenjunga is considered to be the highest mountain peak of the Indian republic and the third highest peak in the world at over 28,000 feet.
If you would not like to fly, take the train from Kolkata (Kalkutta) to Darjeeling. The last stretch of the trip of New Jalpaigaon takes place by means of a miniature train, which weaves through deep jungle, tea gardens and pine forests. This trip is considered to be one of the most beautiful train trips of the world.
Visitors also get to experience one of the most sublime sunrises over the mountains. Go for a walkabout along the narrow paths, feel reinvigorated by the fresh mountain air, and marvel at the majestic chain of snow-covered mountain peaks that are to be seen in its entire splendor, when the veil of mist is cleared. Watch the prayer flags of the Buddhists fluttering in the wind. There is the possibility to visit a Buddhist Monastery for example in Ghoom, where the statue of the Maitreyee Buddha is guarded as a sanctuary.
Sights:Tiger Hill (2,555 m, around 11 km from Darjeeling)
At sunrise, Tiger Hill gives the visitor an extremely beautiful view of Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain on earth. There is a mountain-view platform and a VIP Lounge for visitors. Wind-protected jeeps depart from Darjeeling to Tiger Hill every morning around 5 a.m. so you can enjoy the beautiful sunrise. On a clear day you will be able to see from here very small the tip of the Mount Everest.
Mountaineering Institute (2 km from the Mall)
One must go through the zoo to get to the Mountaineering Institute. It conducts training courses for the mountain-enthused people and has a small mountaineer museum that has information on the local mountains, flora and fauna, mountain climber equipment and interesting relief models of the Himalaya.
Toy Train
This narrow-gauge railroad was completed in 1881. The train line connects New Jalpaiguri and Siliguri with Darjeeling (7 hours). Because of landslides and repairs, normally only a portion of the route is passable.
Ghoom Buddhist Monastery
At a height of 2550 ms, this Gompa of the yellow hat north has established itself in 1875. The friendly monks will share the portrait of the Maitreya (the future Buddha) and other religious treasures with visitors. Photography is allowed. It is situated about 5 miles to the south of Darjeeling and can also be reached with the toy train. It’s the highest stop of the train.
Happy Valley Tea Estate
Visitors will enjoy watching the traditional art of the tea leaves being rolled and fermented, and than dried. One can buy tea at this tea plantation.
