The small city of Chidambaram lies at the east coast of the southern Tamil Nadu, about 120 miles from Chennai (Madras). In the thousand-column hall, there are actually 999 columns plus one that represents Shiva’s leg. Different halls that are partly covered by roofs made of gold, are only partially accessible for non-Hindus. In the northern part lies the large temple tank (water basin).
