The city surrounds the temple dedicated to Nataraja, the dancing aspect of God Shiva, God of the cosmic dance. These impressive examples of Dravidian temple architecture originated under the Cholas, whose capital was Chidambaram between 907 A.D. and 1310 AD. The temple compound is dominated by 4 Gopurams (temple towers that stand over the entrances), which are high up to 500 square feet tall.
There are many other temples in the temple complex, dedicated to other smaller divinities: A Parvati temple of the 14th century, the Subramanya temple, the Govindaraja temple and Raja Sabha, a thousand-column hall that is over 1000 feet long and over 600 feet wide. In the thousand-column hall, there are actually 999 columns plus one that represents Shiva’s leg. Different halls that are partly covered by roofs made of gold, are only partially accessible for non-Hindus. In the northern part lies the large temple tank (water basin).
