Founded in 1485 by Rao Bakaji, Bikaner is surrounded by a 4-mile-long wall and has the 15th century Junagarh Fort in the middle of the city. Rao Bikaji was the son of the ruler of Jodhpur. After the desert tribes of the region were pacified in the 16th century, Bikaner had to surrender to the Mughal Emperor Akbar. Akbar awarded the kings of Bikaner important posts in his military in the exchange for their loyalty to the members of the ruling empire. Soon Bikaner became an important station on the trade route between the north of India and the Arabian countries.
Even today you can see the Havelis (or homes of the rich business persons) within the city. During the 19th century, the trade routes were changed and new harbors, for example Mumbai, emerged. At the end of the 19th century, Bikaner, through the activities of its Maharaja (king) Ganga Singh, became famous for the "Bikaner Camel Corps" which h was active in the colonial wars of England from China to Somalia and served even in the First World War in Egypt. He also led the construction of the "Ganga Canal", a canal system that obtains its water from Punjab and irrigates the parts of northern Rajasthan.
While Devi Kund, about 4 miles east of the city, lies the tomb of the Maharaja of Bikaner. Only a few miles southwards lies the "National Research Centre on Camels", a breeding and research center for camels. Bikaner is also famous for its shops of antique objects.
