Alleppey, also designated as the "Venice of the East", is a beautiful city and starting point of many boat trips through the gigantic canal system, the Backwaters. This extends itself from Kollam in the north, over Alleppey, until Kottayam in the south. Between these three cities, regular ferry services also exist. During your journey the landscape changes from untouched forests to rice fields and banana plantations, and from groves of coco to small villages.
Evening on the Backwaters, the fishermen ignite the oil lamps and smoke wares on their dugout canoes to ward off mosquitoes. The evening is filled with rows of lights that ramble slowly over the water, and the air is fulfilled with the aroma of exotic spices. It’s pure romanticism.
Vacationers can enjoy this first-hand by floating down the Backwaters on a houseboat made in typical bast or bamboo. The houseboats are very comfortable with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, shower and toilet, drawing room and/or roofed dining room in the open space.
The southern starting point for trips through the fascinating Backwaters is Quillon (Kollam), 71 km far from Trivandrum, a typical small harbor and market city at the bank of the Ashtamudi Lake. Every morning at approximately 7 a.m. the public ferry services take off for Alleppey (Alappuzha). In addition, there are the services of private tourist boats.
After the monsoon, the lakes and rivers spill over the banks, and you will see the beautiful lily and Lotus flowers in full blossom. This is the time of festivity including the harvest festival Onam in Kerala and the Malaysian New Year day Chingam. On the second Saturday in August, the annual snake boat race takes place in the river Pamba in Alleppey. The race features about 30 Chundan also called slim boats.
